Are you going to finish that?
Whether I am making chicken soup for my family & friends (Jewish penicillin) or using seaweed, spices, & seeds in my recipes, my intention has been to use food as medicine ever since my father went on a plant-based diet in 1977 to help recover from brain cancer. It has been a bumpy road, especially when a university nutrition professor humiliated me in a huge lecture hall for my suggestion that certain recommended foods at the time contributed to disease…I knew I was right!
With age comes wisdom but also a need for different foods, portion sizes, and sometimes alternative textures. It may surprise you to learn that things like posture, sleep, hydration, & exercise can help your body digest food and are as crucial to your health as the food choices you make each day.
Our food choices are important ones and we make them for many reasons - many of those due to the decisions of people we will never meet and the businesses we trust to put foods on our grocery shelves & restaurant menus. We hope they have our best interests in mind. The more we know about our food the better prepared we are to eat with intention. Food should taste good & help us live our best lives, food gives us energy and reasons to connect in our communities and beyond.
Make the best food choices
The best foods to eat for building strong bones are filled with calcium, vitamin K, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, boron, and other nutrients. Although the best source of vitamin D is from sunshine, there are lots of healthy foods to choose from. Some of the best sources of bone healthy foods come from the ocean, like kelp!
